New York’s Top Four Historic Sites to Visit

When it comes to famous American cities, New York City has to be one of the most famous. The city’s packed full of iconic sights and historic locations, many of which are a big draw for visitors to the area, and this article takes a look at a few of the most important.

Central Park

The chances are if you’ve ever heard of New York City, you’ll know about its famous Central Park. The park was designed and created in the mid-19th century, by Freferick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and today stands as the centerpiece of Manhattan. Covering a total of 843 acres, visitors to the park can enjoy a diverse landscape of rolling fields, walking trails and lakes. Specific highlights include the Sheep Meadow and Great Lawn, the Delacorte Outdoor Theatre and the excellent Central Park Zoo. If you’re visiting in the winter, there’s also the chance to let your hair down and go for a spin on the parks famous Wollman Ice Rink.

The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

One of the most iconic sights in America, the stunning Statue of Liberty always proves a big draw for the crowds. The statue has been a beacon for generations of immigrants and it’s even more impressive up close. Visitors are once again able to climb the statue too, with the inner staircases recently re-opening. Whilst you’re visiting the statue it’s also worth taking the time to explore the wider Ellis Island and its fascinating museum, where you can learn all about immigration in the USA.

Brooklyn Bridge

Though it maybe not on the level of the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge also serves as an iconic landmark; featuring in numerous films and TV series. The impressive bridge was designed by John Roebling and was widely regarded as an engineering masterpiece at the time of its construction; it was the world’s longest suspension bridge when completed in 1883. The bridge is also an important historic landmark, as it was the first land passage between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The New York City Skyline

Whilst not a single attraction in itself, the New York City skyline has to be one of the most impressive in the world. The stunning panorama is best enjoyed from one of the skylines most famous silhouettes, the beautiful Empire State Building. You can take the elevator up to the 86th floor and its viewing platform for an unobstructed, 360-degree view of the city below. While you’re in the building it’s also worth taking the time to explore and enjoy the classical art deco decor and surroundings.
